À l’occasion des vingt ans du film culte qui a fait connaître son père, Paula accepte d’écrire la biographie du “Yul Brynner de la RDA”, comme on appelait celui-ci, Thomas Liebmann, jeune premier du Berliner Ensemble et star de la DEFA, dont la carrière s’est brutalement arrêtée après le difficile passage qu’a été pour lui, la réunification allemande. Alors qu’elle tente de démêler le vrai du faux, en confrontant les souvenirs d’un père qu’elle a peu connu avec ceux de ses proches, Paula voit ses certitudes s’envoler les unes après les autres, à la découverte d’un passé dont elle ignorait tout.
