Plus qu'un simple portrait d'acteur (Quand la ville dort, Johnny Guitar, L'Ultime Razzia, Dr. Folamour etc.), ce livre est l'histoire d'un homme hors du commun. Sterling Hayden, en 70 ans, a vécu plus de vies et accompli plus de choses que la plupart d'entre-nous : capitaine de voiliers commerciaux quand ceux-ci étaient en voie de disparition, espion en Yougoslavie pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, acteur, père de famille, activiste révolutionnaire, écrivain, il était pourtant hanté par l'idée d'avoir failli en tout, sauf ses deux livres. Car cet homme chanceux était aussi "inapte au bonheur", un alcoolique rongé par les remords et les conflits intérieurs entre virilité, crédibilité, honneur et faillites morales qui se bousculaient en lui. Et il faisait tout en grand, à son échelle de colosse. Philippe Garnier.
