Françoise Etchegaray dresse ici un portrait très vivant du grand réalisateur Éric Rohmer, avec beaucoup d'anecdotes sur les tournages et les montages des films. Ce livre est donc à la fois un hommage à l'un des maîtres de la Nouvelle Vague et un précis de cinéma. Où l'on s'aperçoit que plusieurs des grands films de Rohmer ont été tournés avec trois personnes et sans préparation...
