Sorti en 1998, The Big Lebowski d’Ethan et Joel Coen est devenu un film culte et un classique après avoir stupéfié le public. C’est un véritable réservoir à citations, et il a inspiré toute une série de « Lebowski Fests » ainsi que suffisamment d’analyses et d’hommages qui vont du ridicule au déroutant pour remplir une bibliothèque. Cet ouvrage, dont il s’agit de la deuxième édition, comptait parmi les premiers à prendre au sérieux (mais pas trop) les charmes insolites du film, ses prouesses trompeuses et son caractère étonnamment poignant.
J. M. Tyree et Ben Walters se penchent sur la meilleure performance de la carrière de Jeff Bridges dans le rôle du « Dude », détective marginal embarqué dans une affaire d’enlèvement incroyablement alambiquée. Ils analysent également l’approche impertinente et déconcertante du film vis-à-vis de l’histoire de Hollywood (et en particulier du Grand Sommeil), du décor de Los Angeles et de la masculinité héroïque. Mais surtout, ils défendent son humour hilarant et son attachement désarmant aux choses les plus simples et les plus humaines : l’amitié, le rire et le bowling.
Dans leur préface à cette édition, les auteurs réfléchissent à la valeur croissante de la philosophie de Lebowski concernant l’anticonformisme bienveillant et l’amitié malgré les différences. Cette nouvelle édition comprend en outre une interview exclusive des frères Coen, révélant l’origine du nom Jeffrey Lebowski.
