Quand The Big Lebowski est sorti en 1998, la critique et le public n ont pas réagi tout de suite. Et pourtant c est aujourd hui un film culte. Des milliers de fidèles dans le monde ne jurent que par lui, en connaissent tous les plans, toutes les répliques, tous les personnages. Pourquoi un tel enthousiasme ? Dans ce livre, J.M. Tyree et Ben Walters répondent à ces questions, sans jamais oublier que ce film est aussi un des plus réjouissants des frères Coen, un des plus comiques du cinéma américain. Hitchcock et Chandler, Altman et Busby Berkeley, bowling et femme fatale, milliardaire et « White Russians », rescapé du Vietnam et loulou de Poméranie, rien n est oublié dans ce petit livre très savant et très drôle, à la hauteur d un film d exception. Ben Walters est l auteur d Orson Welles (Life &Times) publié en 2005. Il tient la rubrique des cabarets pour le magazine Time Out de Londres. J.M. Tyree écrit dans la revue Film Quarterly de l université de Californie.
