Loin d'Hollywood est le récit du séjour de Chaplin en Europe en 1921, son premier retour sur le continent depuis son exil américain en 1912. "La triple alliance qui a tout déclenché : une tourte au bœuf et aux rognons, la grippe et un câble. Même si un soupçon de mal de pays et de soif d'applaudissements a aussi pu influencer le cycle des circonstances qui m'ont envoyé prendre des vacances en Europe". Voilà comment débute l'ouvrage. Chaplin, qui avait quitté son pays en inconnu, y revient comme l'un des hommes les plus célèbres du monde : il se mêle désormais aux princes et aux rois, et à tous les grands esprits de son époque. En Grande-Bretagne, en France et en Allemagne, il enchaîne retrouvailles, mondanités, imprévus, découvertes, virées loin de la foule et des journalistes, projections du Kid, dont il assure la promotion... Le tout avec humour et vivacité.
