Book Presentation:
John CARPENTER est acclamé, ses concerts cartonnent, on refait ses films. Pourtant, le maverick semble bien en avoir fini avec le cinéma, dont il aura été pendant plus de trente ans un artisan modeste et génial. Déboulant en plein "Nouvel Hollywood", l'amateur de westerns s'est inventé un endroit très personnel à nul autre pareil, dans l'accouplement contre-nature du classicisme à la Howard Hawks avec l'imaginaire de Lovecraft. Il a ainsi renouvelé le champ des genres mineurs : le thriller urbain (Assaut), le slasher (Halloween), la science-fiction (New York 1997), le gore (The Thing). Malgré un accueil assez timide lors de sa sortie, The Thing devient rapidement un film culte. Ce qui autorise Carpenter à tenter diverses expérimentations, du côté des studios (Starman, Les Aventures d'un homme invisible) ou dans les marges de la série B (Prince des Ténèbres, Invasion Los Angeles).
