Ce livre révèle une facette méconnue de P.P. Pasolini, son attrait pour le sport qui fut sa "consolation la plus pure, la plus constante, la plus spontanée". Tifoso du Bologna FC, joueur lui-même avec les ragazzi des périphéries romaines, il fut aussi un observateur avisé du jeu. Persuadé que le football était "la dernière représentation sacrée de notre temps", il voulut changer le regard des intellectuels sur le sens et la portée de ce jeu.
