La société française a-t-elle été trahie par son cinéma ? Le cinéma a-t-il escamoté la réalité sociale et politique de la France ? L'originalité de ce livre est de ne pas analyser seulement, nin principalement, les chefs d'œuvre pour répondre à ces questions, mais de prendre en compte tout l'éventail de la production depuis 1945. L'auteur, en rapprochant l'histoire de la France depuis 50 ans et le tout venant de son cinéma, permet de comparer terme à terme la façon dont celui-ci a rendu compte, ou non, de celle-là.
