En 1968, le journaliste Jon Halliday interviewe Pasolini (1922-1975), à la fin du tournage de Théorème , pour un autoportrait personnel et intellectuel, analysant sa vie, sa carrière et ses positions politiques. Pasolini est à un tournant capital: il n’a pas encore rencontré un très large public, mais est déjà considéré comme une figure majeure du cinéma, de la poésie, du roman et de la politique italienne.
Source d’informations irremplaçables, cet entretien, illustré par de nombreux photogrammes, photos de plateau et d’archives, n’avait jamais été traduit en français. Il est prolongé par une postface du traducteur, qui analyse les derniers films et décrit les ultimes années du cinéaste poète assassiné.
Un document exceptionnel sur l’artiste et l’homme.
Jon Halliday (alias Oswald Stack) est né en 1939 à Dublin. Journaliste politique, spécialiste de l’Extrême-Orient, il est, avec sa femme Jung Chan, le biographe de Mao Zedong ainsi que l’auteur de nombreux essais et également de Conversations avec Douglas Sirk (Cahiers du cinéma, 1997).
René de Ceccatty , qui a traduit de nombreux ouvrages de Pasolini, est l'auteur de sa biographie ( Pasolini , Gallimard, Folio « Biographies ») et d'un recueil d'essais et conférences ( Avec Pier Paolo Pasolini , Éditions du Rocher), republiés en 2024, à l'occasion du centenaire de la naissance du poète cinéaste.
