Pendant la saison hivernale 1931-1932, Charlie Chaplin séjournait à Saint-Moritz. Il prenait plaisir à découvrir les joies du ski, à participer comme arbitre d’un concours de saut à ski, à se balader en traineau et à vivre des soirées fiévreuses avec son demi-frère Sydney Chaplin et son grand ami Douglas Fairbanks dans les palaces de la station. Mais surtout, il était accompagné d’une jeune femme inconnue, la belle May Reeves (son nom d’artiste), qu’il avait rencontrée quelques temps auparavant dans le sud de la France. D’où venait cette belle femme qui avait été engagée pour s’occuper de l’immense courrier qu’il recevait? Quel rôle allait-elle jouer dans le sillage du cinéaste? Envisageait-il une carrière cinématographique pour elle dans ses films? En tout cas, après son long métrage Les Lumières de la Ville (1931), il s’octroyait une récréation du cœur unique dans la neige et les montagnes suisses.

Né en 1954, Pierre Smolik, licencié en droit de l’Université de Lausanne, a été juriste et spécialiste des médias à l’Office fédéral de la communication à Bienne en Suisse. Auparavant, il a travaillé à la Télévision Suisse Romande comme assistant-réalisateur. Cinéaste, il a réalisé des documentaires sur des artistes peintres (Guy Baer, Steven-Paul Robert), ainsi que sur le poète Gustave Roud. Il est l’auteur de plusieurs essais relatifs à des écrivains romands ou des personnalités ayant tissé des liens forts avec le canton de Vaud, dont Graham Greene et Charlie Chaplin: Chaplin après Charlot 1952-1977 (1995), The Freak, le dernier film de Chaplin (2016).
