Pantalon trop court, chapeau melon vissé sur la tête, une canne à la main avec une drôle de démarche c'est l'image éternelle de Charlot. L'acteur est devenu un mythe, une légende qui incarne le burlesque et le cinéma muet. Mais derrière cette image populaire, se dissimule Charlie Chaplin, avec une personnalité tout aussi extraordinaire. Un homme à l'enfance difficile dans les quartiers miséreux de Londres et qui a appris très tôt à se battre pour obtenir ce qu'il veut. Un homme qui a enchanté le monde entier mais qui a été malmené par l'Amérique de l'après-guerre lui reprochant ses sympathies politiques. Au point qu'il devra s'exiler en Europe. C'est cette histoire fascinante que l'auteur raconte dans cette biographie, notamment grâce à des entretiens avec la famille et les proches de Chaplin.
