Il y a quelques années, Michel Comte découvrit dans la succession de Charlie Chaplin des archives photographiques énormes : Des milliers de clichés et de négatifs, accumulés tout au long de la vie de l'étoile du film muet. Chaplin avait rassemblé toutes ces images de lui-même, de ses amis, ses femmes et ses enfants, des photos qui avaient été prises pendant le tournage de ses films, dans le cercle de ses collaborateurs et contemporains, des instantanés de ses voyages, de ses rencontres. Beaucoup des clichés de cette collection extraordinaire sont publiés pour la première fois dans ce livre, qui ne se contente pas de présenter l'inlassable créateur cinématographique dans son élément, mais révèle aussi le personnage privé, un Chaplin peu connu, le père de famille, l'homme derrière le masque de Charlot. Ce volume est une somme de documents authentiques sur un artiste qui se mit en scène lui-même tout au long de sa vie et qui, par delà les caméras, resta sous les feux de la rampe.
