En se plongeant dans des archives de studio et des manuscrits non publiés, en interviewant ses amis, sa famille et ses associés, qui, pour la plupart, n’avait jusqu’ici jamais osé coopérer avec l’auteur d’une biographie non autorisée par Clint, Patrick McGilligan a réussi un véritable tour de force. Il nous explique comment la vie de Clint a été retouchée et enjolivée par ses attachés de presse et les journalistes, revient en détail sur chacun de ses films et examine ses relations avec les femmes (il est le père d’au moins cinq « enfants illégitimes »).

Patrick McGilligan est l’un des plus célèbres biographes et historien du cinéma américain. Ses précédents ouvrages, qui font autorité en la matière, ont pour sujet Jack Nicholson ou les réalisateurs Robert Altman, George Cukor et Fritz Lang. Il vit à Milwaukee dans le Wisconsin avec sa femme et ses trois enfants.
