Avant d’être considéré par la presse internationale comme un acteur-réalisateur de haut niveau, Clint Eastwood a connu le mépris des uns, qui appelaient au boycott de ses films policiers jugés fascisants, et l’adoration des autres, qui voyaient en eux la réponse la plus appropriée à infliger à la déglingue sidérante de nos sociétés occidentales. Respecté de tous à présent, y compris de ses détracteurs, il est devenu un sujet de thèse dans les universités, une innombrable littérature lui a été consacrée, les cinémathèques n’ont pas cessé de programmer ses films, les festivals l’ont porté aux nues et les producteurs sont mêmes allés jusqu’à lui signer des blancs-seings, vu les profits économiques sans précédent de ses succès. L’artiste n’en est pas moins resté modeste face à son œuvre, qu’il ponctue de ce commentaire abrupt: “Je suis un homme qui fait des films, rien de plus.”
De 1964 à 2024, Jean Lhassa a suivi la carrière de Clint Eastwood, qui s’est révélé successivement grand acteur, grand réalisateur, grand producteur et même grand musicien. Il a consacré deux volumes à l’artiste, le premier couvrant la période de 1955 à 1989 et le deuxième allant de 1990 à 2024.
