Figure essentielle du cinéma expérimental américain, Stan Brakhage (1933-2003) est l'auteur de près de quatre cents films, dont Dog Star Man (1964) ou The Dante Quartet (1987). A l'occasion de conférences données à l'école de l'Art Institute of Chicago en 1970-71, il réécrit poétiquement les bio-filmographies de quatre grands cinéastes: Georges Méliès, David Wark Griffith, Cari Theodor Dreyer et Sergueï Eisenstein.
