Après guerre, sous l'impulsion de Jean Cocteau, un puissant ciné-club fit le constat que le cinéma de l'époque était en voie d'uniformisation : Objectif 49. Son analyse tranchait : un cinéma industriel et paresseux s'était imposé grâce aux grands réseaux de distribution et à leur monopole. Un manifeste fut donc rédigé afin qu'un nouveau cinéma puisse trouver sa place en marge des superproductions. Un « festival du film maudit » fut même créé, à Biarritz, où les noms et figures d'Orson Welles, de Renoir ou de Bazin coexistèrent pour la première fois avec ceux de jeunes cinéphiles comme Rohmer et Truffaut.
