Une idée du cinéma nous invite à sonder une conception puissante et exigeante du cinéma, une conception qui trouva sa forme dans le célèbre recueil d'André Bazin, Qu'est-ce que le cinéma ? (1958-1962). Dudley Andrew, biographe de Bazin et brillant exégète de son œuvre, remonte ici le fil de cette idée, à travers une investigation des trois opérations fondamentales du cinéma : l'enregistrement, la composition et la projection. Il en situe l'émergence dans le contexte intellectuel de son temps (André Malraux, Roger Leenhardt, Jean-Paul Sartre), en révèle des facettes méconnues, démontre sa fertilité au cours de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, et la confronte aux films les plus actuels, réalisant ainsi une traversée concise et lumineuse dans l'histoire du cinéma et de sa théorie. Ce faisant, il oppose un démenti salutaire aux tenants du déclin du septième art. Selon Andrew en effet, les bouleversements inhérents au passage à l'ère numérique, loin de saper l'identité du médium, l'invitent au contraire à réaliser sa nature et sa vocation : s'adapter au réel pour mieux l'explorer.
