L'adaptation littéraire du plus grand film de Federico Fellini.
Cinéaste à succès, Massimo Barbiani se lance dans la réalisation d'un nouveau long métrage.
Le contrat est signé, les premiers interprètes engagés, on construit les décors... Mais l'idée de ce film, qui lui paraissait si claire au début, s'évanouit. Massimo ne sait plus ce qu'il voulait faire.
Il angoisse tant qu'on lui prescrit une cure thermale.
La trêve est de courte durée puisque la production vient le rejoindre dans le Grand Hôtel de la Source où il séjourne. Et voilà qu'arrivent tour à tour sa plantureuse maîtresse, sa femme si touchante, puis la divine Claudia Cardinale qui lui retourne le cœur...
Entre questionnements sentimentaux et dilemmes créatifs, Massimo est sollicité de toutes parts. Les comédiens veulent connaître leur rôle, les décorateurs attendent des consignes, le producteur des réponses... Il n'en dort plus la nuit. Parviendra-t-il à éviter un échec magistral ?
En transformant en roman Huit et demi, le chef-d'œuvre autobiographique de Fellini, Marco Caramelli se glisse comme jamais dans la peau de cet illustre réalisateur. Et c'est toute l'atmosphère truculente, sensuelle et féerique de l'âge d'or du cinéma italien qui ressurgit.
