Negli ultimi anni si è registrato un notevole ritorno di attenzione per i rapporti tra il cinema e le altre arti. Si tratta di relazioni che gli studi sul cinema non hanno mai, in realtà, cessato di indagare, ma è indubbio che alcune modalità dell'approccio contemporaneo, e il ricorso alla stessa nozione di altre arti, sembrano rimandare a una stagione che si credeva passata, quella delle estetiche del film. In quei modelli la componente estetica si intrecciava con altre: legate al posto dello spettatore, alle modalità di fruizione o percettive, al sistema delle relazioni sociali. È la sfera del cinema come mezzo di comunicazione e del suo rapporto con altri media (oltre che con le altre arti) che viene chiamata in causa. Ed è su questa che si concentra l'attenzione delle riletture e l'investimento attualizzante di quest'opera.
