Artiste majeur du XXe siècle, d'une profonde acuité sur son temps. Kubrick a porté un regard new-yorkais du Bronx, il est d'abord photographe à Look avant de réaliser un premier documentaire sur la boxe. Son adaptation de Lolita le propulse, dans une odeur de souffre en haut du box-office. Ayant décidé de vivre désormais près de Londres, il enchaîne les chefs-d'œuvre qui consacrent une carrière internationale. Il renouvelle les genres avec une puissance d'invention formelle hors du commun : thriller, comédie, science-fiction, horreur... Il traite des grands sujets qui ont façonné le monde contemporain : la Première Guerre mondiale (Les Sentiers de la gloire), la guerre froide (Dr Folamour), le Vietnam (Full Metal Jacket), la conquête de l'espace (2001), la violence (Orange mécanique, Shining). Son dernier film, Eyes Wide Shut, parfait le portrait légendaire d'un démiurge perfectionniste, laissant planer dans son sillage la part de mystère qui fascine les nouvelles générations qui le découvrent.
