Si Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) fut l'un des cinéastes les plus estimés de tous les temps, il fut aussi l'un des plus énigmatiques. Sa première contribution fut la réalisation, à 26 ans, de l'ambitieux Baiser du tueur, produit en indépendant, et à peine quelques années plus tard il travaillait avec des acteurs de la trempe de Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier et Peter Sellers sur des œuvres aussi essentielles que Lolita ou Spartacus. Ayant acquis le soutien des acteurs, des producteurs et des studios avec ses premiers films, Kubrick obtint la liberté créatrice nécessaire à la réalisation de chefs-d'œuvre sans compromis tels que 2001, l'Odyssée de l'espace, Orange mécanique et Barry Lyndon. En achevant Eyes Wide Shut (1999) juste avant sa mort prématurée, Kubrick a laissé une œuvre brillante et déconcertante.
