Fellini, Buñuel, Spielberg et Woody Allen figurent au tableau de chasse de Baxter, un journaliste anglais spécialiste des biographies exhaustives et critiques. Le manipulateur et maniaque du contrôle qu'était Kubrick n'échappe pas à sa méticulosité de détective.
Rien de ce qui constitue un être humain - aussi génial fût-il - ne reste étranger à Baxter. Si les côtés les moins sympathiques du cinéaste sont épinglés (avidité, contrats paranoïaques, sens de l'humour sujet à controverse...), il sait aussi rendre la cohérence de la vision unique de Kubrick. Comment a-t-il repoussé les limites des films de genre.
De la théorie de l'écriture des scénarios (trouver "les éléments insubmersibles") aux projets ambitieux - La Vie de Napoléon (avec Nicholson dans le rôle de l'empereur), I.A. sur l'intelligence artificielle - ou extravagants (un porno, Blue Movie), jusqu'à la réalisation de Eyes Wide Shut, la mine de renseignements collectés par Baxter est impressionnante. --Hector Fricotin
