Tonino Guerra, romancier, et Federico Fellini, cinéaste, se sont unis pour raconter la chronique de leurs années de jeunesse dans une province italienne à l'époque du fascisme. La figure centrale de ce roman poétique, qui va donner lieu à un film, est un petit garçon à travers lequel les auteurs se souviennent. Bobo en famille, à l'école, à l'église, affronté aux femmes, Bobo toujours récalcitrant, déjà dressé contre toute chose et contre tous. Autour de lui «tout un monde d'autrefois». Cette ronde érotico-héroï-comique se déroule à l'ombre de la bêtise arrogante et brutale de l'ordre mussolinien. C'est l'univers de Fellini lorsqu'il parle de son enfance, comme il l'a déjà fait dans Huit et demi, dans Les Clowns et dans Fellini-Roma.
