M. Night Shyamalan a connu un énorme succès public et critique avec Sixième sens (1999). Par la suite, Incassable (2000), Signes (2002) et Le Village (2004) sont venus confirmer cette revitalisation de l'écriture scénaristique hollywoodienne, en renouvelant notamment le principe du retournement de situation finale, auquel Shyamalan donne une portée existentielle inédite. Contre la tendance postmoderne à l'éclatement structurel, Shyamalan creuse les potentialités de la forme dramatique classique, dans un agencement original d'incidents qui en déploie les enjeux et la portée. L'idée maîtresse qui cheville l'œuvre de Shyamalan réside dans le conflit ontologique de la Lumière contre les Ténèbres, décliné à l'infini, de film en film, entre la raison et les instincts, l'être et le néant, l'ordre et le désordre. Le sens du récit est toujours construit comme une sournoise progression de l'Ombre, jusqu'à un acte de foi, une révélation, qui emporte la victoire finale. Au moment où le cinéaste se livre pour la première fois à l'exercice du "cross over" avec Glass, annoncé pour 2019, à la fois suite de Split (2017) et d'Incassable, ce volume de la revue Eclipses propose de revisiter les différents aspects, tant thématiques que stylistiques, de cette œuvre aussi protéiforme que passionnante.
