Cinéaste visuel fasciné par les mythes, l'imaginaire et les rêves, John Boorman s’est brillamment illustré dans les genres cinématographiques les plus divers : le film noir (Le Point de non-retour, 1967), le survival (Délivrance, 1972), la science-fiction (Zardoz, 1974), le fantastique (L’Exorciste 2 : l’hérétique, 1977), la fantasy (Excalibur, 1981), le film d’aventures (La Forêt d’émeraude, 1985), le film d’espionnage (Le Tailleur de Panama, 2001)…
Mais si varié que soit le cadre des intrigues, l’action engagée relève invariablement du domaine de la quête. Chaque film de Boorman est en effet l’histoire d’un périple accompli par un héros qui, à la suite d’une série de passages et d’épreuves, se trouve changé. Comme chez Jung, dont l’influence est fondamentale, le héros symbolise l’élan évolutif, la puissance de l’esprit, et sa première victoire – parfois la seule – est celle qu’il remporte sur lui-même.
A l’heure où John Boorman annonce lui-même que Queen and Country (2015) sera son dernier long métrage de cinéma, ce 55ème volume d’Eclipses éclaire les principales lignes de force d’une œuvre marquante, riche et singulière.
