Au fil de ses 10 chapitres illustrés, cet abrégé observe au plus près les personnages et les thèmes favoris du cinéma d'horreur: dystopies et science-fiction, maisons hantées, femmes tueuses ou loup-garou. Chaque élément emblématique du genre est exploré sous l'angle esthétique et historique pour montrer comment le cinéma d'horreur joue sur les peurs humaines archétypales autant que sur des angoisses sociales et culturelles spécifiques.
Une partie distincte présente un Top 50 des films d'horreurs à classer au rang de chefs-d'œuvre, depuis des classiques en noir et blanc comme Dr Jekyll et Mr Hyde ou Godzilla à Rosemary's Baby, Le Dieu d'osier, Shining, Le Projet Blair Witch et bien d'autres. Le livre est émaillé d'images dont d'inédites provenant des archives de David Del Valle, parmi lesquels des affiches de films, des croquis de décors, des instantanés de films et des photos de plateau.
