Avec une dizaine de films réalisés depuis 1979, Michael Mann a toujours fait preuve d'une mise en scène rigoureuse et franche, lui permettant de créer des univers solides. A tel point qu'il est en général sous-estimé, du moins en Amérique. Ses critiques les plus respectueux le classent souvent (de manière un peu trop simpliste) parmi les "réalistes". Qu'il s'intéresse au banditisme (Comme un homme libre, Le Solitaire, Heat), aux assassins (Le Sixième Sens, Collateral), au western (Le Dernier des Mohicans), à la lutte feutrée à laquelle se livrent les médias et les grandes entreprises (Révélations) ou à un athlète fameux qui cherche à donner un sens à sa vie dans un monde marqué par le fanatisme (Ali), Mann vise avant tout l'authenticité. Films à suspense, à grand spectacle, suscitant l'émotion ou la réflexion philosophique, ses œuvres sont le fruit d'une imagination sincère et d'une observation méticuleuse des êtres humains et de leurs intentions belliqueuses. L'œuvre plurielle de Michael Mann, jusqu'à son film le plus récent, Miami Vice - Deux Flics à Miami, est analysée dans les pages qui suivent.
