C'est à moi que tu parles ? Pour la plupart des cinéphiles, l'acteur Robert De Niro évoque des termes comme « intense », « violent », « de la rue » ou « revêche ». C'est l'image que De Niro s'est bâtie avec application tout au long des 50 années de sa carrière. Utilisant les gestes, la voix et plus encore l'expressivité de son regard pour convaincre le public de l'intensité de ses émotions et du côté dérangeant qu'il donne à ses personnages, depuis ses premiers films comme Mean Streets, en passant par ses portraits d'hommes violents et perdus comme le Travis Bickle de Taxi Driver et le Jake LaMotta de Raging Bull, jusqu au tour de force comique du père maniaque qu'il interprète dans Mon beau-père et moi. Son parcours, de l'adolescent perturbé confronté à une célébrité difficile jusqu'à l'activiste engagé, suit la trajectoire de plusieurs de ses personnages qui évoluent du désespoir vers une certaine forme de rédemption, fût-elle peu conventionnelle. Dans le monde de De Niro, l'art et la réalité sont en effet souvent impossibles à démêler.
