La comédie prise au sérieux Woody Allen a débuté sa carrière en écrivant des histoires drôles et des scénarios, puis en se lança dans la scène et la comédie avant d'écrire et de réaliser son premier film, Prends l'oseille et tire-toi, en 1969. Comme nombre des premiers films qui le rendirent célèbre, il s'agissait d'une comédie de situation le mettant en scène en personnage malchanceux, peu confiant, se dépêtrant de situations hilarantes et embarrassantes. Il obtint vraiment la reconnaissance de la critique pour la première fois en 1977 avec l'Oscar qu'il reçut pour Annie Hall. Il évolua de la comédie pure vers la comédie psychologique avec des films comme Manhattan, Stardust Memories et Hannah et ses sœur s, explorant l'humour basé sur la personnalité et démontrant une évolution artistique après le ton plus léger de ses premiers films. Son œuvre est aussi marquée par le mélange poignant de tragi-comédie qu'offrent le charme et la fantaisie de La rose pourpre du Caire, la nostalgie de Radio Days, les intrigues multiples de Crimes et délits et le ton doux-amer d'Alice. Le succès critique et commercial du récent Match Point, un drame psychologique tendu et sérieux, est la preuve qu'Allen n est pas encore prêt à prendre sa retraite, et n a pas fini de se réinventer ni de se renouveler.
